Is e-invoicing mandatory in Australia?
For the federal government, yes. All Commonwealth government agencies have been required to receive Peppol e-invoices since 1 July 2022. B2B e-invoicing is voluntary but growing, run through the Peppol network and overseen by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
Peppol is the standard network for exchanging structured electronic invoices, and Australia has adopted it nationally. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is the country's Peppol Authority, accrediting access points and governing the local specification.
Since 1 July 2022, all Commonwealth government agencies must be able to receive Peppol e-invoices, and under the government's payment policy they pay compliant e-invoices faster. There is no blanket B2B mandate, but adoption is growing across the private sector.
