Is e-invoicing mandatory in Austria?

For the federal government, yes. Since 2014, suppliers to the Austrian federal government must send structured electronic invoices via the e-Rechnung.gv.at platform. There is no B2B mandate yet, though Austria is expected to align with the EU’s ViDA initiative on a Peppol-based model.

What is Peppol in Austria?

Peppol (Pan-European Public Procurement On-Line) is the standard electronic invoicing network used across Europe. Austria was one of the first EU countries to mandate e-invoicing: since 2014, suppliers to the federal government have had to submit structured electronic invoices.

Austrian government e-invoices are handled through e-Rechnung.gv.at and the Unternehmensservice Portal (USP). The national format is ebInterface, maintained by the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKO), and the government also accepts Peppol BIS Billing 3.0. Both comply with the European semantic standard EN 16931. The legal basis transposes EU Directive 2014/55/EU into Austrian law.

There is no B2B e-invoicing mandate in Austria yet, but the EU’s ViDA (VAT in the Digital Age) initiative is expected to bring domestic digital reporting, and Austria is anticipated to follow a Peppol-based approach. Connecting to Peppol now keeps you ready for both government invoicing today and B2B requirements ahead.
